Detailed description of goods and/or services
The HSRC Press is a directorate within the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the national statutory social science research agency of South Africa (see www.hsrc.ac.za for further information). The HSRC Press is tasked with the publication and dissemination of the research outputs of the HSRC, and in terms of the HSRC’s statutory mandate, with social science research more broadly. As such, the HSRC Press publishes and markets publications via a range of retail channels in addition to its own online bookshop at www.hsrcpress.ac.za
Subject to availability and receipt of payment, requests will be processed within 3 working days, and delivery confirmed by way of e-mailed reference numbers.
The online purchaser has the option of insured parcel post or courier delivery of the purchased materials, and will be billed accordingly; that is, the purchaser’s account will be debited with the rand value cost of the publication/s selected, the postage and packaging or packaging and courier costs, according to the selection made at the time of purchase.
The offering on this website is not limited to South African clients but online enquiries from North America, the United Kingdom and Europe may be rerouted to the sales agencies of the HSRC Press or to the publisher holding sales and distribution rights for the relevant title selected by an online purchaser resident in the restricted sales and distribution territory.
Return and Refunds Policy
The provision of goods by the HSRC Press is subject to availability. In cases of unavailability, the Human Sciences Research Council (under whose auspices the HSRC Press trades) will refund the client in full within 30 days.
Cancellation of orders by the client will attract a 10% administration fee, and must be returned to the HSRC Press offices in Cape Town, South Africa, within 20 working days (or 4 calendar weeks) of receipt/delivery. Goods returned to the HSRC Press for credit are to be sent at the expense of the purchaser and must be received by the HSRC Press in saleable condition – that is undamaged and in such state or condition as may be acceptable to a reputable retailer or on-seller for sale.
The HSRC Press shall take all reasonable steps to protect the personal information of users. For the purpose of this clause, "personal information" shall be defined as detailed in the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000 (PAIA). Payment Options Accepted
Payment may be made via Visa or MasterCard credit cards or by bank transfer into the bank account of the Human Sciences Research Council (under whose auspices the HSRC Press trades), the details of which and reference codes will be provided on request.
Credit Card Acquiring and Security
Credit card transactions will be acquired for the Human Sciences Research Council (under whose auspices the HSRC Press trades) via PayGate (Pty) Ltd who are the approved payment gateway for Standard Bank of South Africa. PayGate uses the strictest form of encryption, namely Secure Socket Layer 3 (SSL3) and no credit card details are stored on the website. Users may go to www.paygate.co.za to view their security certificate and security policy.
Customer Details Separate from Card Details

Merchant Outlet Country and Transaction Currency
The merchant outlet country at the time of presenting payment options to the cardholder is South Africa. Transaction Currency is South African Rand (ZAR).
The HSRC Press takes responsibility for all aspects relating to the transaction including the sale of goods sold on this website, customer service and support, dispute resolution and delivery of goods.
Country of Domicile
This agreement shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Any dispute that may arise shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts of the Republic of South Africa to which you submit.
The Human Sciences Research Council (under whose auspices the HSRC Press trades) may, in its sole discretion, change this agreement or any part thereof at any time without notice.
