Families and Households in Post-apartheid South Africa
Socio-demographic Perspectives
Acheampong Yaw Amoateng, Tim B Heaton
Given that the institution of the family interfaces with other social institutions in any society, the political, social and economic transformations resulting through colonialism and apartheid in South Africa are likely to have affected families and their residential dimension, the household, for all cultural groups. But studies of families and households before the democratic transition in 1994 were limited by the political economy of apartheid in general, and more specifically, by inadequate quantitative socio-economic data.

Possibilities and Challenges (Colloquium Proceedings)
Compiled by Claire Botha and Michael Hendricks for the HSRC Policy Analysis Unit

The provision of universal access to healthcare, a right enshrined in the South African Constitution, is the responsibility of government. Although much progress has been made towards the creation of a national health system which makes 'access to health for all' a reality, much remains to be done.

The Health of Our Educators
The Health of Our Educators
A focus on HIV/AIDS in South African public schools
Olive Shisana, Karl Peltzer, Nompumelelo Zungu-Dirwayi, Julia Louw

Education is an essential ingredient of the socio-economic development of any country, and educators are a vital part of any nation's educational system. If educators are sick, or absent from school, or leave the profession, the nation stands to lose. Yet the health status of our educators may go unknown. Prior to this report, there were no primary level South African national data assessing the ill-health and attrition of educators. Rumours about their ill-health and reasons for attrition abounded. It is for this reason that the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC) decided to commission the HSRC-led consortium to conduct this nation-wide research assessing the health status and attrition of our educators, with a focus on HIV/AIDS and its determinants.

HIV/AIDS, Stigma and Children
HIV/AIDS, Stigma and Children
A literature review
Harriet Deacon , & Inez Stephney
HIV/AIDS-related stigma has been recognised as a key problem that needs to be addressed in HIV/AIDS interventions with adults. This title provides a review of the available literature in this regard.

The impact of and responses to HIV/AIDS in the private security and legal services industry in South Africa
The impact of and responses to HIV/AIDS in the private security and legal services industry in South Africa
Compiled by the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS & Health Research Progamme of the HSRC

The generalised nature of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa means that it impacts unevenly on businesses. Companies respond in varied ways, and with varied means, to the challenges posed by the epidemic. Assessment of the impacts of HIV/AIDS, and of the responses of companies to it, are critical to help mitigate the impact of the epidemic on productivity, labour costs, and the supply of skills.

The Land and Property Rights of Women and orphans in the context of HIV and AIDS
The Land and Property Rights of Women and orphans in the context of HIV and AIDS
Case studies from Zimbabwe
Kaori Izumi (ed)
The research critically examines Zimbabwe’s land and agriculture policies, and the utilization and efficacy of legal redress. It suggests and develops policy responses to cushion the impact of HIV/AIDS on local communities, especially dispossessed women. While confirming the vulnerability of widows and other categories of poor and vulnerable women and children to property rights violation, the study also analyses the critical roles played by women in establishing and managing urban and rural support initiatives.
