Description

In 1998 Prof. Fanie Cloete undertook a research visit of South East Asia to analyse and assess the capacity of certain selected states to develop and maintain sustainable public services delivery systems in their respective territories. This book summarises the research findings through author observations, interviews and literature relating to the experiences of Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia in this respect.

The book first examines the state of theoretical and empirical data on good governance, service delivery and sustainable capacity building. Prof. Cloete then summarises the condition of the public services delivery in each of the five countries briefly, documents interviews with key decision makers in the field and analyses the available research literature.

The book concludes with the formulation of a refined, holistic model of strategic governance on the basis of the research findings. Appropriate use of this model has the potential to maximise sustainable public services delivery generally in developing countries.
