Coping with immigration and urbanisation in a rapidly globalising environment is one of the policy issues facing many governments, yet the complexity of migration makes it difficult for planners to understand its causes and plan for its consequences. In this wide-ranging work, prominent migration scholars provide insight into the current dynamics and determinants of both immigration and migration in South and southern Africa and reflect on how the lifting of apartheid has affected migration in the region. The book covers three broad areas: macro-level migration trends in sub-Saharan Africa; micro-level factors in South African migration; and a synthesis of current migration theory.

Extract from review by Wazha G. Morapedi (University of Gaborone) in Journal of Contemporary African Studies 2008 26:3 pp.353-354:
"This voluminous book makes a significant contribution to the study of migration. It explores and analyses areas normally neglected in migration studies - issues such as health and migration, why some people do not migrate, the characteristics of different migrants, the gender dimension, and the role of social networks in migration."
Emeritus Professor Wade Pendleton, Cape Town
"The synthesis and summary of migration literature, and its reports on recent empirical research, make this a very important contribution to the literature on migration."
