Both the government and the private sector have recognised the invaluable role that information and communication technology (ICT) plays in responding to national socio-economic imperatives. The importance of ICT skills to the economic, social and political trajectory in a globalised context cannot therefore be over-emphasised. The potential of, and limitations to, intermediate-level ICT skills in so far as they contribute to South Africas human resource capacity is considered essential to the current form and future trajectory of the countrys development.
This book explores the apartheid legacies of the city and demonstrates that cultural life flourished through peoples resilience in spite of adversity. Authors move beyond apartheid history to analyse the reflective ways in which people are coming to terms with that history through memory work, performance and memorialisation. Other chapters provide contemporary views of local interactions such as moments of urban violence or people negotiating the challenges of a globalised world.
The generalised nature of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa means that it impacts unevenly on businesses. Companies respond in varied ways, and with varied means, to the challenges posed by the epidemic. Assessment of the impacts of HIV/AIDS, and of the responses of companies to it, are critical to help mitigate the impact of the epidemic on productivity, labour costs, and the supply of skills.
One of the key determinants for the loss of public educators in South Africa is mortality due to AIDS. This report presents an estimate of the number of educators who died from AIDS in 2004, including the projected distribution of AIDS deaths by age group.
Based on three village case studies from different parts of Kenya, this co-authored study explores the relationship between HIV/AIDS and land rights focusing on women as a socially vulnerable group. The study compares affected with non-affected households and HIV/AIDS emerges as a significant but not primary cause of tenure insecurity.

The Quality Learning Project (QLP) has been a multi-level, multi-site educational intervention that aimed to improve learner performance in 524 South African High Schools.
One of the daunting challenges facing South Africa in the contemporary period is that of achieving social cohesion. Educational institutions should be at the cutting edge of the project to weave a common identity whilst promoting respect for difference. It was this challenge that motivated us to convene colloquia in 2003 and 2006 to discuss the current state of school desegregation and innovative ways to forge ahead in the complex processes of dismantling the legacies of the past and creating inclusive paradigms for our classrooms.
In response to the murder of five Cape Town petrol station attendants in June 2002, a major investigation was conducted into crime and safety at South African petrol stations. Based on input from stakeholders and a survey of 25 petrol stations in the Western Cape, this report assesses the crime situation and formulates security recommendations.
