Critics of privatisation are often told they present no alternatives. This monograph is the sequel to Studying Ambitions: Pathways from grade 12 and the factors that shape them, which investigated the aspirations for future study and/or work of 20 659 grade 12 learners across South Africa in 2005. Ambitions Revised: Grade 12 learner destinations one year on tracks the same cohort of learners into their destinations one year later. Of particular interest to the research team was the sub-set of those who enrolled in teacher education programmes. The extremely low levels of interest in teaching first observed in a similar 2002 HSRC study are confirmed here a finding which has implications for sustainable teacher supply and for the health of an education system upon which the future of the country depends.

The author takes as his starting point events that shock us in their extreme violence, such as the burning of the Mozambican man Ernesto Alfabeto Nhamuave and the Marikana shootings. He notes how the language of the commentary on these events evokes a complex continuation of apartheid�s historical legacy. This paper presents findings from a module in the HSRC's 2006 South African Social Attitudes Survey that was designed by the Centre for the Analysis of South African Social Policy at the University of Oxford. Respondents were asked for their views on issues relating to the importance of work and the relationship between social grants and employment. The findings demonstrate a strong attachment to the labour market among the unemployed, support for more financial assistance for poor people including those who are unable to find work, and no evidence that social grants in South Africa foster a 'dependency culture'.
