RPL: Power, Pedagogy and Possibility is a useful guide for academics, planners, policy-makers and practitioners who deal with the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Its theme of 'knowledgeable practice' marks a departure from much international literature in that it understands RPL as a social practice situated in context, rather than as a set of neutral technical procedures.

The conceptual guide presents the theoretical perspectives developed to illuminate the complex relationships between context and RPL practice. These are put to work in three distinctive international contexts chosen to draw out epistemological and pedagogical issues and possibilities. These analyses provide the basis for an understanding of what is and a consideration of what could be. The implementation guide is structured around questions often asked by those interested in implementing RPL for the first time. The focus is practical, on researching and analysing particular institutional and curricular contexts to provide a local picture of what is, what could be and why. On that basis, the detail of how to implement an RPL procedure is also addressed.

Books and Babies
Pregnancy and young parents in schools

Being pregnant and a young parent in South African schools is not easy. Books and Babies examines why this is the case. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative research conducted in secondary schools in Durban and Cape Town, the book explores how teachers and principals respond to the presence of pregnant learners and young parents in school, and surveys the attitudes of fellow learners towards them. Interviews with the young parents themselves yield rich narratives which, accompanied by a visual essay, invite the reader into their lives as they confront the demands of pregnancy, parenting and school. Books and Babies provides a finely textured analysis of these demands and shows the ongoing need to challenge the unequal and gendered load of pregnancy and parenting, both in schools and the broader social context.

Settling for Less
Student aspirations and higher education realities

This study is the second in the 'Student Choice Behaviour Project'. It traces learners who entered higher education and further education institutions and investigates the factors which influenced them. It also considers the achievability of two of the key objectives of the National Plan for Higher Education: to increase the participation rate in the system; and to shift the balance of enrolments away from the humanities and towards the study of business and commerce, and science, engineering and technology.
