This study forms part of a series of studies on professions and professional education being conducted by the HSRC's research programme on Education, Science & Skills Development. It follows a pilot study on medical doctors, published in 2006 entitled Doctors in a Divided Society: The profession and education of medical practitioners in South Africa.

This major textbook, reprinted for the fourth time in 2004, is written for students in development studies. It provides a comprehensive and multi-disciplinary picture of development research over the past generation, and is organised around four major themes: economic development and underdevelopment, politics and the state, socio-economic development and the state and civil society and the development process.

Based on the 1991 census, this atlas presents a set of demographic, socio-economic and cultural profiles of South Africa. The atlas contains chapters on: demography and housing, labour and employment, education, economic and human development, language and religion.

This publication will assist researchers, students and the public in their understanding of socio-economic rights. The book considers whether the rights listed in the Bill of Rights have been given effect to and gives an understanding of the processes followed by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in monitoring such rights.

Based on an in-depth analysis of several contrasting agricultural regions, this book aims to assess South Africa's on-going agrarian reform and the country's agrarian dynamics.

This socio-economic report focuses on South Africa?s Gauteng Province. Aimed at meeting the needs of policy-makers and planners, the report examines demographic and other changes, educational, language and cultural features, the level, distribution and accessibility of social infrastructural facilities and the provincial economy.

Since its transition to democracy in 1994, South Africa has become increasingly drawn into the resolution of conflicts and the promotion of peace and stability on the wider African continent.
